Lipiflow For Dry Eyes

All About LipiFlow

If you have dry eyes, you may have tried temporary solutions only to have your eyes dry out quickly after. Consider a more lasting option with LipiFlow. Though this procedure has an unusual name, it offers long-term relief from dry eyes. See our optometrists in Helena at Montana Eye Care to see if this treatment is good for you.

What Causes Chronic Dry Eyes?

If you have tried everything and still have dry eyes, you may have a more chronic condition. For some people, a condition also known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) causes long-lasting dry eyes that resist normal remedies. If you have dry eyes, you may be among the 86% of people who have MGD as the cause of their problem.

Dry eyes resulting from MGD happen because the meibomian glands do not produce or cannot send oil to the eyes to reduce the evaporation of tears. When the tears dry too quickly because they lack this protective oil, the eyes get dry, irritated, and sensitive.

What Is LipiFlow?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the types of treatments an optometrist can offer for certain conditions. Currently, LipiFlow is the only electronic option approved by the FDA for helping MGD.

LipiFlow uses an electronically generated vectored thermal pulse to massage under the eyelids and free up meibomian gland blockages. Once these blockages clear, the gland can deliver oil to the eye to hold tears in more effectively, correcting dry eyes.

How Long Does LipiFlow Take?

Unlike other eye procedures, you do not need to go to a special facility to have LipiFlow. The procedure happens in-office. The LipiFlow procedure is painless and only takes 12 minutes to complete.

You may not experience immediate results. It can take six to eight weeks before you gain the full benefits of the procedure.
